I've got my own in the same vein. I thought all that planning and daring would make a difference, and I hadn't really thought it through. And the hope for change really does come through building relationship, with those who agree with you (even via long & frequent planning meetings) and those who disagree with you. Building connection and communicating clearly and directly must come first. And another highlight from your post - moving civil disobedience beyond protest as theater. Common sense parenting advice reminds us that the consequences for misbehavior MUST relate to the behavior itself, otherwise the connection and teachable moment is missed and weakened in the future. Same thing for civil disobedience - gotta be connected to what you're trying to say, and traffic laws don't connect to Earth Day.Barbaranoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12798432.post-80156648011238463212010-05-01T21:41:05.171-07:002010-05-01T21:41:05.171-07:00There is this book that you would love: Cows, Pigs...There is this book that you would love: Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches: The Riddles of Culture by Marvin Harris. One of the points he makes in the book is about the origins of protest marches. Basically for much of human history (basically up until the invention of automatic weapons) -- if you could start a riot, you could overthrow the government. So for most of human history protest marches for were a way to show the government that you had the power to remove him/her from office (and indeed might do so then and there). But now protests are parades that have very little to do with power. I believe that actual organizing (voter contact around a specific issue) is now much more effective at creating change than putting together yet another protest march.RFK Action Fronthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13367576871260141948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12798432.post-71959749721041369642010-05-01T21:17:52.641-07:002010-05-01T21:17:52.641-07:00You are welcome!

And this is one thing that I feel waaay more comfortable doing and I believe in the end does have more power.

It takes each of us doing what we feel most comfortable to affect change. Honestly when I see a comment show up in my e-mail in box these days I usually grit my teeth expecting to get whacked (especially since I opened up my comments to anonymous posters). Folks rarely write in to say they liked a post. So thank you.

This post is also a way for me to challenge myself to do more. I'm an introvert so political ideas are easy for me but political processes are more difficult. But honestly with 1,000 calls each our team could take over the world.
